Hardwood subfloors done right?
I have a 1950's home built in San Diego that needs new floors. Right now there is carpet. Under the carpet is the original 3/8" x 1.5" flooring 9can't be refinished. That is nailed directly into 3/4" x 7.5" planks which are over the floor beams. Now for my question: What should I do with the old flooring? Should I take it out? Should I leave it in and install the new floor into it? Thanks for your help.

If the nail down product is smooth and flat with no high or low spots, you can nail down new solid 3/4" wood over that. Install wood perpendicular to the existing wood floors to better distribute the weight over joists. Keep in mind the increased height of adding another floor that 3/4" will raise floor level by that much and will impact door jambs, doors, transitions to different types and levels of floor covering, etc. If this is going to be a problem, then you may want to remove the 3/8" flooring.
