Can you use a small belt sander instead of the large drum sander ?

I have a 50 year old oak floor, original finish pretty much worn off in many places. A Drum sander scares me...I have a larger belt sander 3" x 21" ....I know I can use this, I know it will take longer, but I never see it mentioned to use a belt sander but I see often people are afraid of the drum sanders...am I missing something bad about belt sanders ?

I would think a belt sander would be harde to use than a drum sander. Because the paper is so narrow, you would have to worry about the sides of the belt besides just leaving it in 1 spot too long. Have you thought about using a floor buffer with a sanding disk? It's more diyer friendly

They also rent the oscillating type sanders, not nearly as aggressive in removing finish, but easy to handle. Seems like they have built in vac ports as well.
