level sub floor

I'm trying to cover a conversation pit in front of my fireplace. I have removed all the conversation pit and am installing joists for the new subfloor. The new 25/32 CD subfloor is slightly thinner than the existing subfloor when the new joist is tight under the old plywood subfloor. I think a layer or 2 of roofing felt on the joists will make up the thickness. Is it OK to place strips of roofing felt on the joist?

What type flooring will you be installing in the pit area? The small difference may not be a problem. But you can use the roofing felt, or better yet, use galvanized steel strips. They won't compress like the roofing material will.

You can use the double layer of roofing felt on top of the subflooring as you lay the flooring, just don't let it overlap the old subflooring. Have you installed the subflooring material yet? Is it possible for you to use 3/4" Advantech subflooring in the area?

Scrap laminate or roofing shingles work, too. Not the architecual ones. Be safe, G
