Harwood Floor Base

We are remodeling our house. The subfloor consists of 3/4 pine T&G boards over which was laid 1/2 particle board and then carpet over that. We want to install 3/4 hardwood instead of carpet. For prep, we plan to remove th particle board. Question - can the hardwood floor be installed directly over the the 3/4 T&G subfloor or do I need to put something else over the 3/4 subfloor first such as 1/2 plywood? Thanks for your responses.

What is your joist spacing? The narrower the spacing (16") the more compatible the flooring will be with the subflooring you have. However, since it is planks, I would suggest applying a 1/2" sheet of plywood to obtain a really smooth floor and prevent any "bounce" experienced with thinner plank style subflooring. Check the transitions to the other rooms should you decide to either install or not install the plywood. Will adding the plywood create a too large transition?

Thanks. The joists are 16 inch centers. If we add plywood, it will be installed over the entire first floor eliminating significant transitions.

Then I would go with the ply overlayment. No problems with doors or jambs, right?
