Question

I have a curved staircase which is made of oak (med)handrails and step 1 on the sides the rest is completely carpeted. In the near future i plan to re-carpet. At this time would like to continue the oak up the side- creating a center carpeted area for foot traffic. Do I rebuild the entire step with oak or just the sides? Thanks

Cool

It is a little difficult to determine what areas you want to add oak to. There are stair parts suppliers that make oak "end caps" for steps as well as all sorts of handrail, balluster and trim pieces. The end caps are applied over unfinished steps and leave a space in the center for a carpet runner giving the look of an oak staircase without the expense. Look in a "Fine Homebuilding" (by Taunton Press) magazine for stair parts suppliers. The difficulty in you case will probably be in finding step parts that match the curve of your stairs. Email me with more details if I have not addressed your questions.
