Do I Attempt a Refinishing?
My "new" home was built in the late 60's and the wood floors need some work. I've never attempted a refinishing before and I'm afraid I might damage the design in the wood. (See the pics) Is this something better left for the pros? Any suggestions?

While refinishing the floors can be a diy job, sanding can be tricky and it's easy to mess the floor up. A drum sander can mess up the wood in a hurry from inept use
If you want to diy, try using an orbital sander on a portion and see if it cleans it up good enough so you can refresh it with a new coat of poly - sometimes that will work if the wood isn't worn too bad. If you expect the sanding to be too much for you, you could hire out the sanding and do the finishing yourself.

Those are some good looking floors, and you don't see them that often anymore. Personally I'd shell out the money to have them professionally done....well worth the investment for floors of that quality.
IMHO, I wouldn't hire out just the sanding and finish it myself, because you're still going to need to do some light sanding/abrading between coats of finish.

Thanks everyone for the replies. I honestly think leaving something like this to the pros would be my best bet. Does anyone have a ballpark figure of what I might expect to pay to sand and refinish? I'm in Memphis and we're looking at about 500sqft.
