refinishing hardwood floor

i recently layed some unfinished hardwood floor and sanded prexisting hardwood. so now that im staining the floor the stain is not matching on new floor and old floor. what do i need to do? i have already put 2 coats on the old floor but it still isn't dark enough and it seems to be spotty looking if that makes any since. Anyone?

Welcome to the forums!

It sounds like you didn't get the old flooring sanded down all the way to raw wood. Some of the old finish remains blocking the ability of the wood to accept the new stain.

New wood and old may never stain exactly the same but it shouldn't be a big difference.

Is the new hardwood spotty like the old?
What grit was used in the final sanding? Too rough or uneven and even oak can look spotty.
But what the previouse poster said is more likely the case if just the new wood looks good to you.

Unless you can wash off the excess stain with a solvent soaked rag [be careful with the fumes] sanding is about the only option.
