Refinishing help

Hi,

We had decided to refinish the hard wood floors in our new house, we ripped out the carpet, got a sanding maching spent hours sanding the floors down. When it was done it looked good and we were happy with it (for the most part)

we applied a minwax oil based stain on the floors and waited nearly 4 days, then applied a coat of water based poly. When we left the house that night it looked like it was going to be really nice.

we came back the next day to apply the second coat and it looked like all of the stain was gone in a majority of the floors, and was still there in other spots. The stain was gone in some places and splotchy in others.

Any ideas what happened, and how to fix it?

Thanks.

Welcome to the forums!

IF I understand correctly, nothing out of the ordinary has happened. The wood has sucked up some of the poly, the harder places in the wood won't suck up the finish like the softer places will.

A light sanding [remove the dust] and another coat will make a big difference. Most wood usually takes 3 coats of finish [not including stain] to get a good looking durable finish.
