best shock absorbing floor covering for active play?
The game room/entertainment center is up on the 3rd floor. 3/4" hardwood flooring is installed. Directly in the front of the TV is a 5x8 rug with a thicker premimum type rug pad underneath; about 3/8" thickness.
The kiddies just got a Microsoft Kinect. For those not familiar with the item, it's an add-on for the Xbox 360 gaming console that has a camera to track full body motion. Some of the games require jumping and in general many of them require you to shift your weight quicky from side to side.
I was wondering what would be a good exercise mat to use to absorb shock to reduce noise below and to prevent the floorboards from losening up over time and getting squeaking. Up to two people can play at once, so you figure anywhere from 80-300lbs of impact.
The rug pad obviously isn't going to cut it, and probably not a thin yoga mat either. Would an exercise bike type mat be sufficient? They aren't very thick but have high density. Or would a gymnastics/martial arts type mat be more suitable? They can go up to 2" thick but they are a bit on the costly side.

7/8" thick rubber interlocking mats would be ideal, temporary and can be moved from their play area to your new shop once they grow up. Just a casual look revealed an example: Buy Alessco Jumbo Reversible SoftFloor Interlocking Rubber Flooring Tiles for less
