hardwood floor - paint it? replace it?

Have an old hardwood floor not in great shape - i was thinking of sanding it and repainting as a temporary fix......i would eventually like to level the floor and replace it with hardwood

Is painting much simpler then restaining?

Do I need to use "porch" paint?

Do i have to put urethane over the painted surface??

THe total sq ft involved is approximately 750 sq ft.......

Painting requires less prep than staining/poly. To paint you first need to make sure the floor is clean. You should use a floor enamel [porch and deck enamel will be ok] While it's best to use a primer, thinning the 1st coat of enamel [about 10%] and using it as the primer is usually acceptable. The floor enamel is formulated for the wear it receives and doesn't need poly applied over it. Some of the better floor enamels are urethane based.
