Installing Laminate flooring, but what about my stairs?

I have carpeting on my floors and stairs and I'm replacing it with Laminate wood flooring. However, I've found limited solutions for laminate stair nosing and generally been advised that it is not a great idea. So what should I do with my stairs? I want something easy because I'm doing it myself.

Any suggestions about what I should put on my stairs? They are internal stairs that lead down to the front door, so they get a lot of traffic. I guess the options really are carpet, wood, vinyl, or tile, right?

Carpet probably gives the best traction and cushion if you were to slip and fall...... but I'd go with hardwood, it looks good and can be stained to match the laminate flooring - it will also last the longest
