Getting paint off of hardwood floors

My GF and I moved into a house. It is fine otherwise other than the fact the office has white paint on the floor. Allegedly the previous owner was going to carpet over the paint..and then the carpet store went out of business..and they were out their money so the owner let it go. Should I use steel wool? It is an older house..floor is not in tip top shape anyways. Just trying to make it look better. The paint is everwhere.

I'd sand it down to bare wood and then stain and finish.

Are these just paint specs/drips? If so, sometimes carefully scraping off the offending paint will work. If the paint is latex, products like 'goof off' and 'oops' will dissolve [along with elbow grease] the paint. If all else fails, you'll need to sand and refinish

I inferred the floors were completely covered with paint, Mark hit a good point in that it could just be splatter from what you've said and sanding completely might be more work than you need to do if it is.
