Tar paper or what

Just pulled up old flooring and going to install 3/4 hardwood nail down. After I have removed old stuff there is a layer of tar paper covering old 1/2 in sub floor plywood. I plan on replacing it but would like to know if there is a better product now. Paper was installed 40+ years ago.
Also am going to screw down sub floor so no squeaks how long of screws and what type and how many per stud. Tks
Nails or staples on hardwood.

Don: I'd use at least 1 3/4" torx head decking screws every 8" to 12". 15 lb felt is fine for underlayment after you screw it down. Minimize your overlap as it can cause problems with the T&G wanting to lift that little 1/16".
