Water stains on wood

I have a dark wood dinning room table that has gotten a few water stains over it the past year from drinks. I am very disappointed that this happened. Especially when I have coasters out for everyone to use I have heard a crazy wive's tale that mayonnaise works somehow. Any tips?

The best results seen here recently were with silver polish.

I'll see if I can find any of the threads and post a link back.

OK, looks like this was heat damage, not water marks:

I think it's ashes mixed with mayo or olive oil.
Scroll down to the bottom of this page and there will be some links there to check out.

Someone even mentioned mayo with ciggarette ashes. So interesting. I would love to know the stories behind who thought of these ideas when they originated....I did scroll down and found some good answers. Thanks.

I hear you - I'm always curious about how people came up with these ideas and also about the stuff they tried first which did not work.

Yeah Mitch, it just blows my mind! It's pretty funny if you ask me. But back to the topic, I ended up just staining the wood, and it seemed to work with a few other touches.
