Installing underlayment over rough plywood - fasteners? advice needed
My end goal is installing groutable laminate tiles, currently I am staring at a plywood subfloor which is pretty rough, lots of divots and remnants of the glue that was holding on some old flooring that I had to remove. My plan was to throw down some 1/4" plywood underlayment on top to give me a nice clean surface to install the tiles on.
The tricky thing is I dont know exactly how to install the underlayment, nor am I sure exactly what is under the plywood. I know there is very old linoleum under the plywood, so i dont want to rip up the plywood and risk exposing that linoleum. My plan is to use glue and screws to secure the underlayment but I'm not sure what length/type screws to use as I don't know exactly how deep I can go not knowing whats under the linoleum.
Any advice is greatly appreciated. Also big thanks to all the contributors to these forums, I have been able to successfully complete many projects just browsing the forums, this is the first time I've been stuck enough to need to post. Maybe someday I can help someone else out!

Welcome to the forums.
Typically, a staple is used for 1/4" plywood in these situations. That said, just what all do you have there? I'm not a big fan of putting something else on top of linoleum/vinyl and I would be inclined to rip it all out first.

Thanks for the quick replies, sorry I was away.
So what exactly I have right now is rough plywood on top of old linoleum on top of a mystery. Since the floor is over a crawlspace I assume I have more plywood under the linoleum. I'm hesitant to rip up the top layer of plywood or the linoleum underneath it as this is an old house and I am concerned about asbestos in the linoleum. Ideally I'd prefer to just build on top of what I have currently.
My layout is basically this:
--------Rough Plywood----------
----------Old Linoleum-----------
---------Fun Mystery------------
----------Crawl Space-----------
Thanks again!

I can't advise doing this the way you intend nor would I do it that way in my own house.
Maybe someone else will have some ideas for you but I'm out of them at the moment
