laminate and tile in the same room, just some hints

Going for my first flooring project. Most of the kitchen will be a laminate floor with the backing already attached to the board. Think this will go pretty easy. However, around the door I want to install tile to provide a mud room area when you walk in. So do I just put cement board down where the tile is going? Do I need to use caulk under around the tile area (under the transition) or just add the transition. Any other hints or tips appreciated
Thanks

What is your subfloor and what is the size, spacing and unsupported span of the floor joists?
