floating laminate over linoleum floor?

Ok so im renting a house that i may or may not buy a couple years down the road. It is structurally sound but very outdated and ugly. I am allowed to do renovations on my dime, but since i don't own the house i dont want to spend too much, but what ever i do i want to look nice for at least a few years. One room of the house has an old linoleum floor that is relatively flat. I know that the right way would be to strip this room down to the subfloor and level it, but im wondering if i can install floating laminate with padding right overtop the old floor? Im looking at using the cheap flooring you get on sale for 76 cents a square foot. I dont usually cheap out on stuff, but if i could do this whole room for $300 and have it last 5 years i would be more than happy with it.

Sure can. I have done all kinds of flooring over linoleum with no issues. Relatively flat is the key.
