Floor for home office

Not sure which of these flooring forums to post in - so let me start here. I have a home office that currently has carpet and those plastic chair things that go on the floor and always crack eventually and I am continually replacing. I want to redo the office and get rid of the carpet. Which type of floor is best for a home office with two chairs that will be rolling around a little - and I don't want those plastic protectors on it. I would like hardwood but am hearing that it is easy to scratch them moving the chairs - so I might be leaning towards tile. Any suggestions/comments/ personal history in this area is appreciated.
Thanks

I have hardwood in my home office. Originally I didn't have a plastic mat but after several years I noticed the wheels on my chair had significantly degraded the finish .... so I sanded, repoly'd and bought a plastic mat. Tile would wear better but the grout joints might pose a problem.
