uneven colour on stairs !!!

I have sanded my stairs in my house it is a victorian house built around 1895/98 i think the wood is pine, the problem is the middle of the stairs is darker than the outer edges and no amount of sanding is changing this, how can i be sure that when i stain the stairs its going to turn out all the same colour please help is there anything i can do?

Got a picture?
Pine is typically full of knots and flaws so it may never come out.
Only way to get it sort of match would be to stain it a really dark color.

Sub floor Problems

Hello, I have searched and searched and have found so much information that it is too confusing to process. My Problem.... I am about to buy and house and it has a basement, 1st story and 2nd story. I am going to carpet the 2nd story so no big deal there. The sub floor on the first flow is not level. At the center of the floor to the fireplace that is a decent decline. I spoke to a "Flooring expert" today and he stated there is no need to level the floor because the underlay will allow the floor to float and there will be no buckling problems. A friend of mine said that his floor did this and he poured Self Leveling Quikcrete on the floor and it solved his problem and he was able to lay the floor. Will the decline in the floor cause a problem and will quickcrete really solve the issue? Also is it safe to use quickcrete on the floor since I have a basement? thanks for you help.Read More

Century home pine wood flooring: Patch or replace?

Hello! My wife and I bought our 100-year-old home about one year ago. One of the first projects I took on was tearing down a wall that divided two very small rooms in order to make a large master bedroom, and ripping up the old carpet and linoleum flooring in order to uncover the wood floor underneath. That's when things got complicated. It turns out our softwood floor (pine, I think) has been cut into many times in the past for various renovations. My initial plan was to patch a few sections and refinish, but given the number of missing sections, I'm not sure what to do. Pictures are below. (The floor is extra dusty since I had just exposed that brick!) What would you do in my situation? Try and patch the floor in order to keep the original boards, or install new hardwood? And if we go with new hardwood, do we rip up the existing floor or install overtop of what we have? You can see the section where the wall was taken out (that's the long strip dividing the room), where some plain boards had been used to fill a gap (the triangular section), and where plywood was nailed into the softwood to install about five layers of flooring on top.
