Please Help A Lady Out

I have plank subfloors. We possibly want to put hardwood down, but need some advice. There is black cutback adhesive and laminate or vinyl right on the subfloor. We don't have to money to get it tested for abspetos so we want to know if we can cover over it, and if so how? Also I'm pretty sure that the planks aren't sealed, so any self leveling stuff would just seep through to the basement.

How old is the house? Vinyl would have to have some form of intermediate flat surface between it and the plank flooring, or you would be able to see the planks through the vinyl. So investigate a little closer and determine what mix you have in your current flooring. I suspect your floor is thicker than you think.

A floating engineered floor could be put down over the existing flooring such that you would not have to remove.

You could put 3/8" plywood over the current floor and nail hardwood to it.
