Looking to put down engineered hardwood in a house we just moved into. After reading many posts about Lumber Liquidators ,I am looking for another source. What do you think about Ifloor, or the big box stores. We are retired and trying to do this on a budget. It is only the two of us and one old dog, so traffic will be light.

I would try a locally owned store. They should be competitive on price and the service will probably be better.

As Sam says, look locally, and look at the product more than who is selling it. Read reviews for the type floor you want. I have often found good deals from local flooring places as opposed to bigger outlets.

hardwood floor installation - reversing directions

Hello, For those who had read my first thread, I resolved my floor joist situation. I didn't even need to sister the joists. I removed all the old flooring down to the original sub-flooring, and used a framing nailer to tack them properly to the joists. I then lay a 5/8'' plywood which I glued and screwed down. Solid as rock, and barely 1/8'' difference every 8'. Now my question is, is it possible to install hardwood floors going in two directions? What I want to do is start on the wall that separates the kitchen from the living room, and lay the floor towards the front of the house, and then start from the first line I lay down, and bring it to the back of the house. This would end up needing a strip of wood that I would put in the groove of that line, and allowing me to start going in the other direction. Is this recommended? I want to do this so I have the straightest looking floor possible, seeing as the house is probably not perfectly square.Read More

Aluminum oxide vs standard Poly finish for Red Oak ?

Hi Everyone, We recently bought 1500 sqft of Bellawood pre-finished (natural) red oak flooring which i'm very happy with. However, now I have to figure out what to do with all of the unfinished red oak stair treads that we bought as well. The salesman at lumber liquidators was telling us that the best thing would be to use the same Aluminum Oxide based finish that is used by Bellawood (for both look and durability) but since we're in California where A-Oxide is banned, we would only be able to buy standard poly finish. Was curious what you all thought about this? My wife and I were planning on making a trip to Nevada at the end of the month for a little vaca so there is a possibility that I could buy it there.
