Here's what's on my mind at the moment.
Stairnose - Just how does a stairnose work? The top stair is currently covered with carpet. I want to remove the carpet and replace it with the stairnose. How does it transition to the carpet as it continues down the stairs? Does the carpet just tuck under it? Is the stairnose nailed to the floor?
Padding - Does the padding "need" to be taped together?

Not at all, just don't expect it to be a chat room. I've been in Denver for a week, and may have missed a few, with limited time on. Grandchildren will trump this site every time.
Not seeing what you are seeing, I will stab in the dark. The top, carpet level will get the carpet wrapped over the nose and fastened just under the nose. Your riser and the rest of your steps will be wood.....not engineered, but full 1" bull nose treads, stained to match your flooring. I don't understand how this carpeted floor relates to engineered flooring if you are leaving it in place. Are you removing the carpet? Pictures may help.
