Hardwood Floor Patch

I had a couple of half walls taken down and the floors underneath where the walls were have been patched (it's red oak). I want to know if it is possible for me to just re-finish this patched area (or with a little overlap) as opposed to having the entire downstairs refinished. If it is possible, how would I go about doing it?

Is the old flooring stained? If so, you'll have to do that. If not, do you know what finish is on it?

Generally it's difficult to just finish a portion of a floor. If you can get the stain and/or gloss to match about the best you can do would be to finish individual boards. Any overlap onto another board will show! Pics might be helpful - http://www.doityourself.com/forum/el...-pictures.html

Can I lay laminate over tile?

I'm getting some quotes for laminate flooring. One estimator told me he can lay the laminate over some tile I have and that the underlaying would compensate for the uneven areas where the grout is. A different estimator told me they would have to flatten the area with cement before laying the laminate. Who is right? So I thought I had met all the requirements as far as flatness for my new Pergo laminate floor, but I got about 1/2 of it down and I'm noticing that it flexes in a couple spots when I step on it. This is in a bedroom, so it's not going to get a lot of traffic, if that matters. Is this something to be concerned about? If so, what's the best way to fix it? I looked at leveling compound at Lowes, but it said that it wasn't suitable for OSB. I was going to carefully take up the floor and re-examine it for low spots and try to use leveling compound. It's over an OSB subfloor on a 3rd floor of a 100 year old house, so weight is a concern. It originally had a single layer of hardwood that I had to remove for various reasons.Read More
