Question Cleaning hardwood floors after pulling up carpet

The hardwood floors in my house have been covered with carpet for 19-40 years, depending on the room. I am finally getting going on pulling up all this old disgusting carpet. I suspect that there are going to be dark pet stains in places, and I'm going to try the hydrogen peroxide method on a small part of one of these.

I am planning to sell my house within the next year, and my plan is to move first, then have the floors done when the house is empty. This way I don't have to worry about keeping cats out of the living room for 2 days and foul toxic odors for a week. But I will want the floors to be at least passable while I live here.

The padding under the carpet is pretty much pulverized. I will be vacuuming up the loose pieces, but I need to know what to give the floor a really good cleaning with before putting some kind of polish on them. The house is a suburban NJ cape from the 1950s, the floor is some kind of oak, I'm pretty sure. I'm also sure that there has been no wax or finish on these floors since the carpet was put down. In one room I replaced the carpet when I moved in 19 years ago and I know that there is a long deep scratch down the middle and some pet stains. The other rooms are anyone's guess.

Can anyone help me with how to proceed and what products to use? I've heard good things about Bona products but never used them. Thanks.

It is really best to refinish the floors now. Any wax/polish you apply to the existing finish will need to be removed preferably prior to sanding as that can grind the wax into the wood Pet stains would need the existing finish sanded off before attempting to bleach them out.

Problem is, I can't refinish the floors now. Frankly, I've blown all my ready cash on other remodeling that had to be done and I can't pay for it right now. I just want to make them tolerable until I move, because I'm not listing until I move out. If I find pet stains and have to spot-remove the finish, I just want something I can put on temporarily. Would I be OK just giving the floors a good cleaning? What about the spots I have to sand?

Years of dirt seeping thru the carpet more or less sand away some of the existing finish. In your situation I'd probably just clean it and try to use rugs to hide the worst spots.
