layer of laminate floor

Hello all,

I was told that the laminate floor is layers of fake wood. However, after I got an example from local store, I can feel the at least the top and bottom layer are real wood. Just like plywood!

Question> Can someone correct me on this?

There is a difference between engineered flooring and laminate flooring. Engineered flooring uses a prefinished layer of wood bonded to an engineered core of various types depending on brand/quality, etc.

Laminate floor has a layer of laminate, like formica type laminate, that has been printed to look like wood or stone or whatever, bonded to a similar engineered core.

 

Your exploded diagram is for laminate which is pressboard with a picture of wood on it. Your sample is of engineered flooring which is similar to plywood construction in which layers of wood are compiled at opposite angles to each other to make a more stable flooring product. Some people use the word laminate interchangeable as the top layer of real wood is actually "Laminated" onto the rest of the wood layers. They also make some cheaper engineered flooring that looks similar except that the center is pressboard (HDF) and the top and bottom layers are real wood. So this more of a hybrid than the samples you provided.
