What material to patch the fireplace hearth and hardwood floor ?

I have wood fireplace and hardwood floor. A year back, I saw the joining in between hardwood floor and hearth were showing some gaps so I used the Dry wall putty to patch it. However now those gaps are open again ( see the image ).
Any idea what material shall I use to patch the opened gaps ? Will the silicon or similar ( paint-able) caulk would be a good idea ?

Any latex caulking will work to fill the hole, but I'd add base board and 1/4 round or shoe molding at the bottom, because that floors not going to be flat.

I agree, you always want baseboard next to the floor as it's more durable than drywall/plaster and IMO looks better too.
