Stained Stair Treads

I have some stairs that are very basic. They are just framing lumber for the most part that are stained. They are stained with an oil based darker brown. We are happy with the look, but I know that I should apply some type of sealer/finish to help protect them. Any suggestions?

You should apply 2-3 coats of poly, sanding lightly between coats. Oil base poly will deepen the stain color some while water based will just give it a sheen [no color change] Oil base generally wears better than water based poly.

Another vote for oil based polyurethane.
