water removes finish on old hardwoods

My wife and I just bought a house built in 1930 with some original (or at least old) hardwoods. My wife used a paper towel and some water to clean a spot on the floor and found that doing so had removed the finish of the wood. The spot now revealed grayish/raw wood. Any idea why this would happen? And what is the solution?Name: unnamed.jpg

Welcome to the forums!

IF the floor's finish is original to the house it would likely be either shellac or lacquer. Neither will wash off with water but ammonia can somewhat dissolve shellac. The fix would be to sand down the floors and refinish.
