Hi everyone, I have ripped out old oak hard wood flooring with an intent to replace it with new hard wood. My house is 1960s, so the original sub floor is made of 5 inch wide and around 3/4 of an inch thick planks installed on 45% (picture attached). I would like to flatten and reinforce the floor prior to laying new 3/4" hard wood, as in some areas the floor joist have warped or sagged. I also have a basement apartment, so I would like to add an extra layer in order to reduce sound transference. I spoke to some flooring guys at HD and some opinions were as follows: 1) 1/2 plywood is sufficient 2) 5/8 tounge and groove 3) One guy said that the plywood needs to be 3/4 " to really provide that stable and levelled base. The price difference is about 6$ between each thickness and I am talking around 950 square feet of flooring. Advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.
