How to make a Straight line

i am trying to make a straight line of course nothing is square in the room. What is the best way to make a straight line on the floor so they will be straight. Is there any easy way to do it maybe a laser?

 

I am guessing you have two reference points available.

If so, a chalk line???

 

You can use a masons line if you just want to check something to see how straight it is... put in a couple nails or screws on each end... tie it so you can do some measuring...

If you are ready to snap a line, use a chalk line.

 

No, I just did a quick measurement and they are off. I know i cant use the wall as a line. I am worried my line wont be straight. Every one I see on youtube uses the wall to make the line. 12in off the wall but if the walls not straight my line wont be either

 

Your line will be straight if you only have two points. However, you line will not be parallel to both walls if they are not parallel. You will have to make a compromise between the two walls.

 

If one wall is straight, use a square to get a straight line started off the wall, then use a straight edge etc to continue the line.

 

I use a laser line to shoot down one wall at approximately a distance just shy of a full board width. I then measure from the other wall to the laser line to see how far off it is. I then make adjustments to the line until I am comfortable that everything will look good. I use a permanent marker and make a line in the laser beam on the floor every two feet for reference. I also make a reference point at the end of the laser line on the wall so I can realign the laser if it goes off track for some reason. I keep checking to make sure my floor is still correct as any floating floor can move while you are installing. Check often throughout the install.
