Replace old hardwood without subfloor with Plywood?

Hi,

I'm trying to put down new engineered hardwood in a few rooms. The existing solid hardwood (see image) is not level, has no subfloor and is nailed directly to the joists.

What is the recommended approach here? Few questions:
1) Does it make sense to level the existing hardwood floor before adding underlayment and engineered hardwood on top? There are gaps in the hardwood - would the leveling fluid run through the flooring into the basement?
2) Or should the hardwood be removed and replaced with Plywood?

Appreciate the feedback!
Thanks

i'd start by looking under that floor to see why it's not flat and fix that first.
Any old house I've worked on has had undersized, over spanned, poor footings under the beams.
Other things I'd often find would be, fungus, powder post beetles, termites, joist splitting (often where they were notched to sit on the rim beam)

Hi Joecaption,

I should clarify: there are pretty localized areas where the floor is uneven partly because the floor itself has some damage (dips) or perhaps due to the underlying structure.

So your suggestion is to inspect each joist without tearing the floor up - is that correct? In my basement the joists are exposed (no drywall) so it could be done.

What kind, nail/staple down or floating?

How unlevel, whats the max depth over a 10' span?
