Question

I recently discovered that I have hardwood floors underneath the "battleship" linoleum in the bathroom of my 80 year old house. It is uncommon/wise to have wood flooring in the bathroom? If I refinish, how do I protect against water & moisture damage? How do I control slipperiness? Any suggestions?

Kari,

While it's less than common, there's nothing wrong with having hardwood flooring in your bathroom. I found it under the carpet in my master bath when I was preparing to put ceramic tile down. It ended up there after a previous owner's remodeling job turned a tiny bathroom and a tiny bedroom into one nice-sized bathroom.

You just have to make sure that you refinish it such that it is waterproof. The folks at your local home improvement store or flooring store should be able to help you with an approporiate finish.
