Hardwood flooring on concrete without subfloor?

Hi All, my first post.

New DIYer here. Bought a house recently. It had carpet in the basement unit. Removed carpet, has concrete beneath. Thinking of installing hardwood. But a subfloor and hardwood will increase floor height substantially and causes other issues (doors, uneven floor height with bathroom/kitchen).

Is there a way to install hardwood on the concrete directly? Is it a good idea? (I live in MA, house is subjected to new england weather if it matters). If not, what are the alternatives?

Thanks in advance.

Engineered flooring and a glue down installation would be what you'd want.

Only certain floorings can be installed below grade, look into vinyl floorings.
