I am trying to refinish my hardwood stairs and have sanded the treads. However, there is some mysterious white stuff on either side of every step that I just can't completely sand off. It was applied vertically against the grain of the wood, and it doesn't look like caulk. I am starting to think it is wood filler. Can someone please help me identify it? I am planning to use Minwax Complete 1-step to refinish the stairs. If it is wood filler, I would imagine the Minwax product will cover it fine. Any feedback is greatly appreciated!!
Wood fillers do not accept stain, so you will likely need to color it with a furniture marker before you stain. Furniture markers are like a permanent magic marker that comes in a variety of wood colors.
I am going to install laminate by Traffic Master from Home Depot in a guest Bedroom over concrete (40 years old). I purchased the underlayment from HD also and was told it was premium and would provide the vapor barrier. The brand is Ultra Seal Floor Muffler. It says it provides superior moisture protection. I just want your advice on whether or not it will act as the vapor barrier? There is no evidence of needing a vapor barrier, but the flooring instructions says to use one. Is there a top and a bottom to this underlayment?Read More
About 15 years ago I sanded (well done) and stained our oak wood floor with water-based poly stain. Overall, it came out good but the worst part was that my first coat was too thick in some spots and left some dark stain under the next few coats. I'd like to refinish with a light sanding but can I thoroughly sand (to the bare wood) those darker spots, put on a coat or two over those areas and then do the whole floor?
Also, most of the floor is just a bit worn on the surface but a few areas have some deeper/darker wear. Is there a way to remove that "dirt" stain without sanding those areas deeper. Hopefully some way to kind of bleach it out. It's not "bad", just some dark "sliverey" stains.
Thanks,
