Replacing small, broken hardwood floor piece

Hi Everyone.

So i need some advice on replacing a small piece of broken board underneath a vent in one of the house's main rooms.
I've attached a picture, but i'm not too sure what kind of wood this is and how I would cut it out precisely to make it not look so out of place.
The wood is stained with Minwax Jacobean 2750 Wood Finish.
There's a vent off to the side that goes over this hole so it looks decent. Just that little piece of wood is cut off.

Anybody have any idea what kind of wood this is or a good tool to cut off a piece just over the next joist?
My only guess may be Ash because it's readily available around my area.
