So i need some advice on replacing a small piece of broken board underneath a vent in one of the house's main rooms. I've attached a picture, but i'm not too sure what kind of wood this is and how I would cut it out precisely to make it not look so out of place. The wood is stained with Minwax Jacobean 2750 Wood Finish. There's a vent off to the side that goes over this hole so it looks decent. Just that little piece of wood is cut off.
Anybody have any idea what kind of wood this is or a good tool to cut off a piece just over the next joist? My only guess may be Ash because it's readily available around my area.
Hi all...
My friend had a builder install new laminate flooring throughout her flat. The builder advised that the existing door threshold bars should remain in place and that the matching door bars she had bought should go on either side of the existing bar, which is a block of wood. He laid the floor accordingly. I am attaching pictures of how it looks.
This doesn't seem right and looks awful to me. Can anyone advise what can be done to repair this and make it right? The guy insisted that because the flooring is now cut too short, taking it up to the threshold and having just a single door bar is no longer an option. Any advice would be appreciated.

Our hallway is an L shape and the installer has laid the laminate floor in the configuration shown in the diagram below.
I would like to know if it is ok for the tiles that have been placed in a non staggered format to remain that way? Each tile covers the whole width of the room and because of this the installer says it is structurally fine. What would the ideal pattern and layout be, both structurally and aesthetically? Any advice would be appreciated.
