Staining Old Cork Tiles

Staining Old Cork Tiles
I.m not sure if this is the correct forum for cork tiles, I thought that since cork tiles are made of wood, maybe it is the right forum. If not please forgive me.
There are cork tiles over 60 years old in my bedroom.. I applied two coats of Miniwax Stain + Poly. It turned out beautiful! However, three months later it started all peeling up. Is there a brand of stain that will work? Removing the Miniwax Stain has been a lot of work and I have put a lot of scratches and holes in the tile.
If anyone knows about cork tiles and have any suggestions, please reply.
Thank you.
Nancy

If you stain the floor, use a water-based, high-quality stain. ... Allow the stain to dry before you seal the floor.
Minwax is not a real quality product, just a cheap brand they sell in BBS.
They also state to use a water based stain and seal, so maybe the poly was not the right product!

I don't recall ever trying to finish cork. What is behind the wall? My first thought that there is moisture migrating thru the cork causing the poly to pop loose.

Which brand of stain should I use?
There is a possibility that I may have not waited long enough for the first coat to dry thoroughly. I also did not sand the first coat before applying the second.
It is such a shame because it turned out so beautiful...way better than expected. It is so much work to remove it, so I don't want to go thru this a second time.
Thank you for your replies.

Stain works by being absorbed and the first coat tends to seal enough that a second coat does not work.
