Oak parquet repair project - need advice
Small sections of parquet floor need replacing in hallway, where a wall and linen closet were removed. Squares are 7" with three 2 1/4" strips in each. 3/4" thickness. House was built in 1960, and they just slapped the oak directly onto the concrete floor with some black adhesive. Wood manufacturer says I shouldn't try to replace the missing pieces that way, but instead lay a plywood subfloor (which means tearing up the whole thing). I understand their reasoning, but if the oak was glued directly to the concrete 60 years ago, and hasn't caused any problems, is it "ok" to just install the missing sections with a good adhesive, and call it a day? It's about 10 or 15 sq ft involved, maybe. Thanks for your advice.

You answered your own question. If that's the only way you want to do it than that's your answer. Yes, parquet used to be glued right to concrete floors. If the floors in that house are OK you're probably good doing the same for the repair.
Be careful when working. Some adhesives used back then contained asbestos (part of why they work so well).

Thanks, Pilot Dane. I appreciate the heads-up about possible asbestos. Yeah, asbestos in the kitchen flooring, asbestos in the siding, lead paint on the doors... it's a wonder I'm still standing. It's either glue the new pieces in place with high-strength adhesive, or level it off and lay carpet. I'm sure not about to start ripping up the whole floor, especially with your asbestos warning to consider.

Just remember, asbestos in a static state poses min risk, not saying it's good, but until it's disturbed, like sanding painted walls it's not a deadly issue. Take precautions and use newer, maybe not better, materials and your probably in a better state than trying to remediate an issue that doesn't exist!

Have you found a place to buy replacement parquet tiles?
I have parquet in my kitchen and dining rm [over plywood] I had planned to put it in my hallway and small bed rm but nobody around here sells it anymore. I did find some on ebay but the price was ridiculous, where I paid around a $1 a piece for them 25 yrs ago, they wanted $8 plus shipping. I ended up switching gears and using a thick laminate.

marksr - Nope, no tiles, at least not in the size I need. I've only been able to find planks that I'd have to cut down to the 7" length for my floor.
