Unhappy

I am installing pergo planks in my family room and kitchen. The family room is an addition off of the kitchen. The problem is, the two floors are uneven by about 1/4 inch. Currently there is sheet metal (about 6 inches wide) covering the space where the rroms connect. My question is, how do I treat this situation best? Could I remove the sheet metal and install the pergo and separate the rooms with t-molding or hard surface reducer? Or is there a better suggestion?

The first thing that comes to mind is that any moulding transition is going to be a toe catcher especially for any guests in the house.I have run into this problem before. One suggestion is to install underlayment in your living room to bring it up level with the kitchen then you wont need any moulding here. One other suggestion I have done in the past is to use the T-bar but on a table saw rip off some of the vertical leg on a bevel so it can lay on both laminate surfaces and also on the leg.I have also ripped the whole leg off on a piece of T-bar and used this on a slight tansition, the problem with this is there is no (leg)support in the middle and it is prone to breakage,as it will split lengthwise when walked on.One thing I just thought of...we do no sell Pergo brand laminate and the T-bar may have a metal insert in the leg that uses T head bolts for attachment. If this is the case you can try to find a good color match in another brand without the metal track or rip a simple reducer out of solid oak and stain it to match your floor.Just remember if you use any of the moulding options,to leave an expansion joint and nail your molding in the expansion joint, never in the laminate .Hope this helps, let me know how things progress!

I'd go w/ the underlayment idea. You can get some 1/4" plywood to match the different levels.

Thumbs up

There is an adaptor molding available for this application. The molding will work for up to a 1/2" variable in elevation The problem becomes one of color match as this molding is aluminum and only available in silver, gold, or bronze color. Send me an Email for a picture that you can use to take to the store to show a clerk
