Question

Can you advise if it is imperative to use a water-resistant PVA adhesive in fitting a laminate floor in a kitchen. If a non-water reistant PVA was used, could this cause the boards to part and why would this happen? Many thanks.

Hi,its very important that you use the water resistant adhesive especially in a kitchen or bath. Also use the same mfgs.adhesive as your flooring so not to void your warranty. For example Tarkett adhesive has a fine red glitter in it so they can identify their glue if any warranty issues arrise. The laminate copanys use different core materials bonded to the laminate face and back under tons of pressure. The core material is exposed on all four sides and this is where moisture gets in if the right adhesive and a vapor barrier are not used. im sure you dont want to invest this kind of money in a floor covering only to have it buckle in a short time.Hope this helps.

The idea of using the flooring manufacturers brand is a good one for the reason stated. The flooring adhesive is a PVA Type II in the USA and B-3 in Europe. Either will degrade over time if subjected to constant moisture but will stand up much better that a type 1 PVA. The warrantee is a bigger issue because it may well exceed the projected life of the adhesive in an adverse application.
