Advice on quality & durability of solid hardwood brands?

We are going to be getting solid hardwood floors put in our house in the next couple of months. We looked at some Bruce at a big box store but I am concerned about some of the reviews I have seen about Bruce from big box stores. As big of an investment as this is going to be I want to get something that is going to look good and last. I would hate to spend this kind of money and the finish not hold up. So I am looking for advice from people with experience. What brands should I lean toward and which ones to avoid?

Open to engineered but not completely there yet. Worried about the thin top layer of wood.

Thanks for help.

We had Global GEM Heartland Oakley waterproof SPC vinyl flooring installed and love it. Looks like hardwood and tough as nails. We had to go to a flooring store to get it, not sure it's available in the big box stores. It's been really great. We are very hard on our flooring. With 4 large dogs and muddy, wet boots from working in the barn (3 horses) the floors have held up very well.

Buy from a flooring store. Avoid a big box.
