Simple questions about underlayment...
#1

I really need some help here... Any suggestions will help.
How much of a gap do I need between the walls and underlayment? Also, what is the preferred method of tacking underlayment down, or will a floating underlayment work for me? The subfloor is 3/8" plywood.
I am putting in 3/4" particle board (cost ran high with plywood...) and the finished floors will be carpet. This is in a previously unfinished 2nd story...
Thanks,
Rob

Particleboard subfloor installation
According to the National Particleboard Assoc. (NPA) a glue-nail fastening system is best. Spread white carpenter's glue (not subfloor adhesive) onto subfloor with paint roller and then screw/nail down panels. Driving screws/nails directly into floor joists is best for most stability. Stagger underlayment seams so they don't fall over a subfloor seam. Stagger sheet end joints as well. Avoid seams in middle of doorways or high traffic areas. Product should be laid perpendicular to floor joists. Following manufacturer's installation recommendations is always best.
