Sub Floor

I'm installing a ¾”hard wood in the hall from family room (all ready hard wood) to the living room (carpet) I'm going to have an ¾”transition between the carpet and the new floor. I have reducer strips. But I was wondering if I could remove the ¾” sub floor and replace with ¼” plywood. I have 16” on center joists, than the transition will be ¼”

I do believe that 3/4' sub is the standard if you remove the 3/4' and go to 1/4' you may run into stuctural problems down the road with poping boards etc you need a good base to nail the hardwood to.

Transition of carpet to hardwood

Carpet can be turned and tucked against hardwood.
