Question Older Hardwood Floors - wax finish?

We have a 50 year old home with hardwood floors. I've never had hardwood floors before and I'm wondering how to tell if they are sealed with wax?
I'm thinking they are but I've cleaned them with water based cleaners (I know you aren't supposed to for wax) and they don't seem to be ruined. They are kind of dull though...how do I know if they are wax and if they are...how do I clean/renew them?

A simple test to determine if you have a waxed finish is to pour a tablespoon of water on the floor in an inconspicuous place. If it is a wax finish, the wax will turn white. You can remove the white spot from the wax by rubbing with recommended paste wax for wood floors and fine steel wool. Wax finish floors should never be cleaned with water or damp mopped.

Never wax a urethane finish.
