Question Nailing wood floors

Some advice:
I am putting down two floors in a restoration and addition project and I was going to rent a special nail gun for wood floors. An experienced carpenter tells me that I don't need to use a nail gun, that I can do it manually. I am not sure that it would be a good idea to do it this way taking into account my experience level with this type of building medium. Any thoughts would be appreciated.
