Question Sand the whole floor?

I am moving into a new home. I am planning on refinishing a wood floor in a bedroom. The floor appears to be in good shape except around the edges look to be lightly stained/discolored from ware. I think the room use to have a rug that left the outsides of the floor uncovered approx 18". Should I try to sand just around the edges or the entire surface? I have tried cleaning the floor with mineral spirits and some of the discoloration came up but there is still a definite line around the floor.

Thanks!

For best results I'd have to suggest in refinishing the entire area.

Finishing wood floors

Refinishing the whole is the way to go! For refinishing info, including the National Oak Flooring Manufacturer's Finishing Manual, go to http://www.finishingwoodfloors.com

You are correct with your assumption of the carpet. The outer floor was exposed to sunlight and wear. If you do refinish it, there will likely still be a difference in the color of the wood. That's just the nature of wood.
