Talking Removing Glue from Hardwood Floors

How do I remove the glue from carpet padding from my hardwood floors. I guess back when carpet was a fad whoever wanted carpet just smeared some sort of glue on the hardwood floors to attach the padding. I can get it off with water and a scraper but it is very time consuming. I'm hoping there might be some sort of solvent the maybe I could just apply, wipe it away, and then sand them down.

What does it look like? Black dried on foam looking or brown wax looking. Yes you can sand them but depending on what kind of adhesive it is you will go through a ton of paper. Have you tried using a stripper?

It is black dried on foam looking. But under that it looks sorta like a very light brown glue that was applied with a trowell (sp?).

If it is a large area i would recomend sanding. It will take less time to remove than using a stripper and alot less mess.
