What are these?

I was cleaning up leaves from the back yard and all of a sudden I see these start coming out from what I felt was the foundation. The house is 28 years old and was treated for termites in the past.

Not termites. Did you get a warm spell there in NJ about the time that these guys swarmed?

A close-up of one would help but I believe that they are flying ants and their tan/brown color indicates that they are what we call “citronella” ants. If you were to crush some and immediately sniff, you would smell a lemony, citronella odor. they are harmless. Not much you can do about these guys as the main colony lives deeper in the ground than most ants, but they are harmless. I had them at a previous house. This time of year we get calls on them as their behavior resembles termites. Might be the only ant colony that swarms in the fall.

A three-segmented body is an ant so take a close look.

Yes. It has been warm this week and it peaked at 60 yesterday.
Not sure exactly how it was treated but we did see the bait stations in the lawn around the house.
I am attaching a close up. Will go home and try get a hold of a couple for the smell test.

Definitely not termites. I’m more convinced that they are what we call “Citronella ants”. They are harmless..

Thanks! I checked one of them and I can also see from the pic that it has a 3 part body, which makes it an ant!! Never been so happy to see an ant before...
