Help IDing wood boring insect on my deck
Hi there!
I have a new redwood deck (in San Francisco, CA) installed in January, and went out last Sunday, 7/20/14, and found hundreds of these insects all over it! The ones with the brown heads range from miniscule to tiny, while the ones which appear to have wings are larger. The pics are taken with a magnifying lens. I think they are different forms of the same insect. While they seem to be perhaps eating the wood, they are not creating visible holes or dust. The contractor had never seen them before and was unsure if they need to be eradicated. If anyone knows what they are, I'd also like to know if I can get rid of them on my own, hopefully as non-toxically as possible.

I don’t know what they are. I’m on the east coast though and you guys could have different insects there. Maybe someone else here will help. Otherwise, I suggest collecting specimens and taking them to a local county agent type of person. They will give objective info; no sales job. Here in Pa the county extension agents are from Penn State. When you find out what they are, let us know when you get a chance.
