gap under wooden arch

At the entrance to my living room I have a wooden arch. Recently I have noticed there's a gap between the bottom of the wood and the floor tiles and every day there are new particles lying there (see picture). I do not see any holes in the wood. What is it?

Or it could be a rodent since it looks like there might be a hole going down.

I think Carbide is right, I was spending to much time looking at what looks like two lines of missing wood that's back lit in that trim and missed what looks like huge hole in the floor.

Is this a picture of the exterior? It does look like an animal is burrowing. Take samples of the debris, dirt, etc and wet it. Does it smear like mud? If so, then it is soil from under the slab.
