Mercury T-stat

Mercury T-stat

I have old mercury T-stats in my house. Are they dangerous and should I replace them w digital?

Mercury thermostats (the Honeywell T-87 "round" was the most notable) are perfectly safe. The only hazard is if the mercury vial inside the thermostat is broken. But unless you have rambunctious kids that are liable to smash the thermostat on the wall, I'd leave it alone, unless you want digital for its setback abilities or other reasons. The mercury stats were silent in operation and there were no exposed contact points to get dirty or corrode. Plus, with most digitals, you'll need to remember to change the batteries regularily.

Digital t-stats are more common place due to accuracy . less tendency to not be accurate , would be an up grade , most merc. t-stats tend to drift in accuracy in the years , its not a waste of $$ to replace.....
